Carole Mendez - President

Carole Mendez

Carole Mendez is an experienced corporate attorney working in a global legal organization and has lived in the District since 2006. Carole holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University School of Law. She serves on the MSU Kellogg Biological Station Director's Advisory Board and previously served on the Board of Directors for the Hospital Hospitality House of Southwest Michigan. Carole is also affiliated with the Junior League of Kalamazoo, past president of the Junior League of Annapolis, and a native of Battle Creek. She and her husband, Juan, have three children.


 

Lin Marklin - Trustee

Lin Marklin is an instructor at Kellogg Community College and a small business owner. Her professional career in post-secondary education has included an emphasis in educational technology and teaching excellence. She is a certified online instructor through the Michigan Virtual Learning Collaborative. Lin has served on the Technology Committee and the Online Course Development Committee at Kellogg Community College. She is a member of the Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning, Michigan Foster Parent Association, and Michigan Education Association. She and her husband have been foster parents since 1997. Lin holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from MSU, Master of Science in Rhetoric and Technical Communication from MTU as well as two Masters of Art from WMU, one in Communication and one in Educational Technology.


 

Krystal Scott-Rhodes - Trustee

Krystal Scott-Rhodes is an entrepreneur who has served in the Air National Guard since 2009 as an F-16 Crew Chief, as a Financial Manager, and Process Improvement Lead. She has earned her Bachelor of Business Administration (Management), Associate of Arts, Associate of Aviation Maintenance Technology, and her Associate of Financial Management. Throughout her professional career, she has volunteered at least 5 years as a Steward, Delegate, and then as the SC State Representative (President) for LIUNA, representing federal employees in South Carolina. Her dedication to serving God, her country, state and community has led her to Michigan in 2018. Her two daughters attend Gull Lake High School and Gull Lake Middle School. She cheerfully dedicates her time to volunteering within the Richland community, Gull Lake Community Schools, with military teens from around the world with Military Teen Leadership Summits, and wherever there is a need and an opportunity.

Desiree LaDuke - Trustee

Desiree LaDuke is a certified teacher who holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan-Flint with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education. She taught in Illinois and after moving to Richland in 2007 substitute taught in Gull Lake and Kalamazoo Public Schools. She liked the flexibility of being a substitute as it allowed her to volunteer in the GLCS as PTO President, Board Member of the Gull Lake Fine Arts Foundation, Junior Achievement volunteer, Girl Scout Leader, Odyssey of the Mind coach, Little League coach and President of the Gull Lake Little League. In 2015 she, along with the safety coordinator, led GLLL in receiving a national award in safety, an achievement awarded to 5 out of the 5000 leagues in the United States. Desiree served as Richland Township Clerk from 2015 – 2019 and currently manages a law firm. She and her husband, Rob, have two daughters who both attended GLCS, one graduated in 2020 and one is a Senior this year.


 

Jeff Brown - Vice President

Jeff Brown was first elected to the Gull Lake Board of Education in July of 2001. He has served as VP, Treasurer and Secretary of the Board, He has chaired the Finance, Personnel/Negotiations, Community Relations and Bond Steering Committees and has also served on the Curriculum Committee.

He grew up in Kalamazoo and he and his wife have lived in the Gull Lake area since 1981. He and his wife Sandy Game owned Gull View Market, and Morrows/Chatterley’s Nuts and Candy and T-Shirts Plus in the Portage and Lansing areas. Jeff began his career at GVSU as Director of Housing and Student Activities and Performing Arts Center Production Manager. He was Wellness Center Director at the Sherman Lake YMCA, CEO of the Kal County Poverty Reduction Initiative and retired in 2018 as the State Director of Communities In Schools of Michigan. He has served on multiple local, regional, state and national Boards and Committees.

Jeff and Sandy’s three children Sean Game-Brown, Jesse Game-Brown and Hannah Waller (Game-Brown) attended and graduated from GLCS. They have two grandchildren. Jeff is a musician and loves fly fishing, camping, cooking, photography and playing in his R&R band.


 

Laura Zervic - Treasurer

Laura Zervic and her husband have lived in Richland since 2005. They have two children who are students in the Gull Lake Community Schools. Laura is an active volunteer in the community and in the schools. She has served as the President of the GLCS Fine Arts Foundation since 2015, served as the Treasurer of the GLMS PTSO and has directed the talent shows at the Ryan Intermediate School and the GLMS since 2015. Laura earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati, and a Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. Laura is the Executive Director at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre.


 

Mini Paulose-Murphy - Secretary

Dr. Mini Paulose-Murphy works for General Dynamics Information Technology (GDIT). She received a Master of Science degree in Clinical Microbiology from Long Island University and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Western Michigan University. She received her postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, M.D. conducting research in virology. She and her husband, Kelly, have lived in Richland for over ten years. They have three daughters, two are currently attending Gull Lake Community Schools.  Dr. Paulose-Murphy actively volunteers in the schools and has coached Girls on the Run and Odyssey of the Mind, and served on the Grants Committee for the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation.
