Math Readiness

 

Before children start kindergarten, they should know the numbers from 1 to 20.

They should be able to count and to know the numbers even if they are not in order. (Circle the numbers as your child learns them.)

You can teach them by counting their fingers and toes. You can count blocks or toys. You can talk about how many years old they are.

 You can read books that have numbers in them. These things teach children about numbers through play.

 

There are lots of words you can start teaching your children from birth.

Here are some questions with words children need to know to be ready for math: (Circle each word as your child learns it)

 

Which two blocks are the same?

What color is the apple?

Which block is different than the others?

Which one is soft, the pillow or the table?

Is the sand paper rough or smooth?

Which one is hard, the floor or the kitten?

Who is big, you or your dad?

Which is smaller, the mouse or the elephant?

Is the giraffe short or tall?

Which has a longer tail, the gorilla or the lion?

Is the garage door wider than the front door?

Can you make your body narrow?

Would you like a thick or thin piece of birthday cake?

Can you crawl under the chair?

 

Can you climb over the bed?

Who is in our house today?

Who is in back of the car?

Are you standing in front of me?

What is on the table?

Who is sitting next to you?

Can you get inside the tent?

What lives outside our house?

Can you crawl through the tunnel?

What shape is the sponge?

Are the stars near or far away?

Can you show me a curved shape?

How many sides does the table have?

Is the ball flat or round?

Can you roll the pencil to me?

How many blocks can you stack?

Can you show me a ball shape?

Can you show me a box shape?

Can you show me something that is pointed?

Can you find something that is cone shaped?
