Math Department
Philosophy:
Mathematics is a sequential discipline. Because of this, mastery of fundamental concepts is necessary if an in-depth understanding is to be attained. Through experience, we have found that students who have gained a mastery of at least 80% of the material in a given mathematics course have a better chance of finding success in a subsequent course. Therefore, in selecting a mathematics course, we are requiring a written recommendation from the student's math instructor. Remember that in making a recommendation the instructor will consider the student in total, with consideration given to the student's abilities, interests, motivation, study habits, and past performance. Although it is a requirement that students need to earn three credits in mathematics for a high school diploma, most colleges and universities recommend, and we concur, that students select four years of mathematics and/or that they schedule a mathematics course in their senior year. It is our intent that students advance their knowledge of mathematics, and therefore, we recommend that students select courses that are at the next appropriate level.
